Experience Details
In Japan, few things can compare to spending an evening drinking cold beer with friends and nibbling on edamame beans and savory grilled chicken skewers at a local izakaya restaurant.
Each person has their favorite dish, whether it's yakitori skewers, oden (stewed fishcakes and vegetables) or tamagoyaki rolled omelet. In this izakaya cooking class, you’ll get to learn how to make five different izakaya dishes to complete an assortment of foods to satisfy a wide variety of cravings.
As soon as you arrive, you’ll be handed an apron to put on. The chef will begin with a cooking demonstration, going over traditional techniques that can be easily recreated back home. Then, it'll be time to get cooking! You’ll prepare yakitori by chopping, seasoning and skewering chicken before grilling it to perfection.
Next will be oden, which involves boiling ingredients like konjac, deep-fried tofu and daikon. You’ll also make dashimaki tamago, a Kansai-style Japanese rolled omelet with dashi (a fish-based soup stock.) The chef will teach you the flipping technique that results in a creamy and impressive omelet every time.
This will be followed by hiyayakko, a refreshing, chilled block of silken tofu served with toppings, particularly popular during Japan’s hot and humid summer. Finally, you’ll stir-fry three kinds of mushrooms with butter and soy sauce for your last rich and delicious side.
After the session, you’ll enjoy the meal you’ve prepared. The recipes are straightforward and easy to recreate, so you can bring the taste of an izakaya into your kitchen anytime.
Please note that alcoholic drinks are not included in this lesson.
