Experience Details
Katsudon is a hearty comfort food in Japan made up of a delicious fried pork cutlet over rice. During this special cooking class in Tochigi, you can learn to make your very own bowl of katsudon from the local specialists! This Katsudon and Katsuniman Cooking Class is held at the original Tsurumi Shokudo in Tochigi, a restaurant that is nationally famous for its delicious katsudon dishes. During this cooking class, you will be able to make both of Tsurumi’s most famous specialty dishes: katsudon and katsuniman! The first is a classic dish of fried pork cutlet over rice, and the second is Tsurumi’s snack-size, hybrid invention: steamed pork cutlet filling inside a fluffy Chinese steamed bun! The original Tsurumi Shokudo in Tochigi Prefecture has been running for over 3 generations since opening in the early 1960s. Today, you can still taste that delicious signature sauce (“tare” in Japanese) found in their recipes and make it yourself. Their famous local specialty restaurant has been loved throughout three generations. Now nationally famous, branches of Tsurumi Restaurants can be found all over Japan with the same delicious flavor. You can learn the secret to making Tsurumi’s addictively delicious katsu, which has been around for over 50 years! A cooking instructor at the restaurant will teach you about their specialty steamed katsu. It is made using their famous sweet and sour sauce which combines flavors from both the cutlet and tasty onions. Using locally-grown pork, sweet locally-grown onions, and delicious high-quality eggs, you will learn how to make delicious katsuniman and katsudon. Making the steamed katsu as filling and topping respectively, you will also learn to make their special Chinese buns using a dough made of rice flour (making the buns springy and moist!) To top off a delicious cooking class, you will receive an apron with Tsurumi’s ultra kawaii (cute) katsuniman character stamped on it as a souvenir!
