The tea ceremony has a history of hundreds of years, originating from samurai culture and was once considered the ultimate form of entertainment. Our experienced host will explain and guide you about the special Japanese sweets used in tea ceremonies while you sample matcha tea.
In this popular Japanese sweets making experience, you can enjoy the main sweets and matcha green tea served by the kimono-clad host. The course is held in a 24-tatami-mat authentic tatami room and lasts about 60 minutes. We can provide guides in English and Japanese. Koubouji Temple was originally established in 816 by Kobo Taishi Kukai in Wakayama as a center for Buddhist chanting. It was later relocated to Mita, Tokyo, by a nun in the mid-Meiji period. In 2014, it underwent major renovations and now includes a columbarium called "Karoto Tokyo 納骨堂「かろうと東京」."
Known as the 13th temple in the Gofunai 88 Sacred Sites pilgrimage | 御府内八十八ヶ所霊場第十三番札所, it attracts many visitors daily.
In 2021, Koubouji became the first temple in Japan to receive the “Eternal Flame,” lit by Kukai 1200 years ago, from Taisho-in Temple in Miyajima.
