This was our first trip to Japan and to Tsukiji market so it was nice to have a knowledgeable guide show us the sights without the stress. For our tour group we got assigned to Akiko and she was an absolute joy. Akiko is a retired elementary school teacher and we were her “students” for the day and I mean that in the most endearing way, as she was constantly checking during the tour to make sure that everyone in the group was comfortable and cared for as we made our way thru the market sampling food and getting insights. What I especially liked is that the tour introduced us to who were in my opinion some of the “smaller”, “mom and pop” shops. The ones without the long lines of people waiting to take pics of their food for instagram, and the ones whose food was just as enjoyable. On the tour we could see a lot of closed storefronts, casualties of Covid like everywhere else, and the vendors we visited were super appreciative and welcoming for the business. Mutual win-win.
