No other yakitori restaurant in Tokyo is quite like Torikado. Situated on a quiet street just a few minutes walk from Meguro Station, this restaurant might be a bit hidden from plain sight as it's on the basement floor, obscured behind an outer door.
The yakitori master Yoshiteru Ikegawa opened up Torikado as an overflow for his main restaurant, but also a place where his apprentices can get an opportunity to gain hands-on experience. While you won't see the maestro himself, the head chef of Torikado, Kohei Onoda, is just as capable. Onoda acquired various skills of Ikegawa, including his attention to detail and artisanal focus.
Torikado has one single yet expansive omakase menu that includes plenty of internal organs. Among the meticulously curated dishes are enzyme-rich rice bran pickles, lightly seared breast meat dabbed with grated wasabi root, chicken's neck skin, fatty tail meat, and tsukune. They may sound unconventional and unusual, but rest assured that while each ingredient's flavor holds a sense of identity, they all come together as a very harmonious dinner.
The main dishes at Torishiki are no doubt ground-breaking, but expect a wonderful range of appetizers and sides that balances the dining experience out. Even though Torikado is in their early days, it's safe to say the potential of this yakitori restaurant is unlimited.
