A wonderful experience with lots of helpful and interesting information about Zenjoki Temple and Nagano. My daughter and I did this while the rest of the family skied and we are so glad we did. The local foods included were very thoughtfully selected and very special. Loved the traditional oyaki dumplings experience in front of the open fire (perfect on the snowy day). Delicious! And the tea and sweets in a store that had once been a tea house were delightful. I bought extra for the family. Our food quirks (I’m a pescatarian and don’t drink alcohol) were taken into account by our host and it was a very enjoyable and informative morning. Thoroughly recommend!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this food tour with Mark. It was both educational and fun as we learned about the local cuisine and the region, and we were pleasantly surprised to discover he’s also Canadian! The variety of food was excellent, and there was certainly plenty to eat. The highlight for us was definitely the mochi ice cream at the end of the tour.

Bestselling Vegetarian Japanese Street Foods

One of the most beloved vegetarian options you will encounter is Okonomiyaki, a delicious Japanese pancake made from a batter mixed with shredded cabbage, green onions, and topped with savory sauces. This dish is versatile and can be easily customized to include a wide variety of vegetables. Another popular street food you must try is Mochi; these are chewy rice cakes that come in various sweet flavors filled with ingredients like sweet red bean paste, green tea, or even seasonal fruits.

Another tempting treat is the Yaki Imo, Japan’s iconic roasted sweet potatoes. This simple yet satisfying snack is one of the healthiest options and provides a naturally sweet flavor without any added sugars. They’re often sold from trucks that play folk music as they drive around town during the winter months.

For a savory snack, Yaki Onigiri, or grilled rice balls, are a fantastic choice. These are traditionally flavored with soy sauce and can be filled with vegetables or pickled ingredients, offering a delightful textural contrast of a crispy exterior and a soft interior.
