佐治亚州位于葡萄栽培和酿酒业最有利的地区。葡萄的各种本土品种的大量存在也表明，佐治亚州是野生和栽培葡萄形成的中心。在该国发掘期间发现的酿酒设备，即压石机，葡萄破碎机，公元前2-3千年的各种酿酒容器，证实了即使在那个时期，酿酒也是格鲁吉亚人民经济活动的重要分支。
