Hellenic Parliament

The history of the impressive building of the Hellenic Parliament is intimately linked to the history of the Modern Greek state. Initially, the building served as the palace of Kings Otto and George I. It became the Parliament and Senate building a hundred years after it was constructed, and still houses the Hellenic Parliament today. Through all those years, the building has undergone a series of changes and has been modernised.

Ermou Street

Ermou Street is a thriving pedestrian destination with a great history. Combining modern commercial activity with old-town atmosphere, Ermou Street starts from the west side of Syntagma Square and leads to Monastiraki. Its bustling sidewalks are lined with large stores, boutique designer shops, little snack bars and coffee shops. In the middle of the pedestrian area, the historic 11th-century Kapnikarea stands out, with its beautiful murals by Fotis Kondoglou. Ermou Street is the busiest and most expensive commercial street in Greece, making it a must-see destination.

Monastiraki

Monastiraki is a marriage between what is fake and what is real. Most people want the fake stuff believe it or not. It is cheaper for one thing and they can't really tell the difference for another. But for those who know quality, wandering through Monastiraki is not a hopeless endeavor as it may appear to you on the surface. There are some very cool shops here, that you won't find in your local mall, or even in the Grand Bazaar of Constantinople. You just have to look for them and learn to recognize them. It may take turning down a small side street that the doe-eyed masses are oblivious to as they wander in droves down Hepheston Street and Pondrossou. It may mean crossing Ermou and going into the narrow streets of Psiri.

Varvakios Central Municipal Market

If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, then you’ll certainly love the Greek capital after a visit to the Athens Central Market. This is literally the Grand Central Station of food, where people from all walks of life converge to discover the freshest and most delicious ways to satiate their hunger. Make no mistake, everyone shops here, from celebrity chefs to neighborhood grocery store owners. Named after one of Greece’s national heroes, gentleman pirate Ioannis Varvakis (1974-1825), this is a tribute to the everyman, as the Athens Central Market, aka the Varvakios, knows no class divides. Replacing an older, much more haphazard structure that eventually collapsed in 1884, this is a monument to Greek produce, where every edible food source under the sun is bought and sold in front of your very eyes.
