Kigali CarFree Zone

Your walk through Kigali's car-free zone starts at the site of the infamous RTLM hate radio station and ends where Rwanda’s first republic flag was raised at independence. Kigali Heights, one of the city’s most frequented malls, overlooks the Kigali Convention Center, inspired by Rwanda’s traditional huts. Visit Zuri, a women-led footwear enterprise using African art prints and sustainable materials. What to Expect: At Kigali Heights, you will visit Zuri, a women-led footwear enterprise started by two young Rwandan entrepreneurs. Marvel at the creative sandal designs made from African print materials, known as Kitenges, and other sustainable products. These sandals, popular among Kigali's women, could be your next favorite pair.

Kigali Convention Centre

This car-free zone, frequented by youth for its free Wi-Fi, features a statue symbolizing Rwandan women's resilience. Campaign Against Genocide Museum

From 1993 to 1994, during the Liberation War, the parliament building hosted part of the Arusha Peace Accords and 600 RPA soldiers protecting RPF leaders who were to form part of the Broad-Based Transitional Government. It was closed during the genocide and reopened as the National Parliament in late 1994. In December 2017, a museum dedicated to the Campaign against Genocide was officially opened to the public in the parliamentary building. What to Expect: Rwanda’s parliament has the highest proportion of women representatives worldwide. The rooftop offers panoramic views of Kigali, aided by a 3D topographical map. Enjoy panoramic views of the city from the parliament rooftop. End your tour at Rwanda’s first craft beer brewery, introducing women to brewing and creating opportunities for female farmers. Today, Kweza continues to honor the tradition of beer. In Rwanda, and most cultures around the world, women have traditionally made beer but not been able to benefit from that creation and lineage at the commercial level. Kweza aims to have women running all aspects of the business and to enable African women to share in the profit of the product they've historically always made - as investors, staff, or leadership - and ultimately build generational wealth on that history.
