My friends and I were fortunate enough to have the experience of cooking with Auntie K. Her place was conveniently located in Accra and we were greeted with a warm welcome. We were asked to meet at 10 a.m. and I am grateful that she chose that time because it can get a bit warm cooking over an open flame in the peak heat of the day. So I arrived a day later in Accra, was more jet-lagged from the extra day of travel, and had trouble getting oriented. All of this did not matter to Auntie K, who patiently took it all in stride with a wonderful sense of humor. She lives Akwaaba! Though we got started late, by the end we had cooked four traditional dishes (eggplant garden egg stew with smoked fish and served on yam, jollof rice, marinated grilled chicken, and fried vegetables). The food was amazing, and the companionship was even better. I really connected with her and she was up and taking her cooking and her passion for food and community.
