Experience Details

An exciting two-day tour in Matsushima Bay, stay at a fisherman’s house and join him for a hands-on fishing experience the next morning! It’s the ultimate deep cultural experience in Japan!

Meet your local English speaking guide at Sendai Station, where they will bring you to your homestay location. Meet your friendly hosts and enjoy some relaxed chit-chatting. The afternoon is free, with no particular schedule, so you can either hang out around the house and enjoy the soothing feeling of stepping on tatami mats with your bare feet, or go for a self-guided bike tour. Breathe in the fresh air while you admire the beautiful view from the coastline and stop by the area’s attractions, such as Jyomonmura Village Museum, Mt. Otakamori, or Saga Valley, to name a few. Your hosts will be more than happy to give you recommendations about places to visit and to hear about your adventures later at dinner time.

Back at your guesthouse, relish a home-made Japanese-style seafood banquet and get to know more about Japan and Matsushima from your hosts. If you are lucky and open up, you may even hear some anecdotes and personal stories! The fisherman’s family speaks in Japanese, but you’ll be assisted by an interpreter and have the rare chance to genuinely converse with Japanese folks.

The next morning, if you snooze, you’ll lose the opportunity to board a fishing boat and experience the local lifestyle. So, make sure to get up early and learn a variety of techniques from the professionals: surf-fishing, net-fishing, basket-fishing, and more. End this exciting tour with a well-deserved BBQ featuring your catch and the freshest seafood, together with some local vegetables. It’ll be the most satisfying feast during your journey across Japan, because you’ve earned it! And you’ll come away from the experience with an insider’s perspective you’ve gained during your homestay, and wonderful memories.

Experience Location

Located just half an hour northeast from Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Matsushima is a rural town on the east coast of Japan in the Tohoku region. Literally translating to “pine islands,” Matsushima is famous for its scenic bay dotted with over 260 pine-clad islets, a group of tiny islands which have long been considered as one of Japan’s 3 most beautiful views, or Nihon Sankei. Renowned for high-quality local oysters from Matsushima Bay, Matsushima is also known for being home to one of the most important Zen Buddhist temples in the Tohoku region, Zuiganji.
