Experience Details
The Tohoku region is full of wonderful local foods, making the area an absolute foodie paradise! In particular, the Miyagi Coastline is well-known for its delicious oysters (“kaki” in Japanese) which are juicy and intense in flavor, while Matsushima region’s oysters are known for being especially tasty. Matsushima Bay is home to a famous natural site in Japan that is considered one of the country’s three most beautiful views, where over 200 islets with picturesque pine trees fill the bright blue ocean. Needless to say, this Matsushima Oyster Extravaganza is perfect for oyster addicts and nature lovers. You’ll meet your guide at Sendai Station and take the train to Nobiru Station, and from there take a taxi to the starting point of the hike up to the observation point at Otakamori. Enjoy the scenery from one of the 4 best great views of Matsushima (approximately a 60-minute to return trip to/from the observation point), and then return to the main town area. After meeting a local fisherman, you’ll jump on a local fishing boat, head towards the oyster rafts and experience oyster harvesting. You’ll get to taste up to 3 oysters as you go, and they couldn’t be fresher! You’ll also enjoy a boat cruise around Matsushima Bay, and discover hidden bays and rock formations only known by locals. After getting to know the local oysters, it’s time for an all-out oyster feast. That’s right, you’ll be having an all-you-can-eat Matsushima oyster lunch at a local oyster shack. Are you ready for the challenge? Following lunch, you’ll explore the town of Matsushima with a guided walking tour, stopping by a local store that specializes in local oyster senbei rice crackers. Made in front of your eyes, it’s the perfect oyster snack! On the way, you’ll enjoy some shopping along the Kaigan-dori shopping street and pay a visit to the oldest historic building in the city, Godaido Temple. Shop for some souvenirs if you can manage it after your oyster feast and boat cruise!

Located just half an hour northeast from Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Matsushima is a rural town on the east coast of Japan in the Tohoku region. Literally translating to “pine islands,” Matsushima is famous for its scenic bay dotted with over 260 pine-clad islets, a group of tiny islands which have long been considered as one of Japan’s 3 most beautiful views, or Nihon Sankei. Renowned for high-quality local oysters from Matsushima Bay, Matsushima is also known for being home to one of the most important Zen Buddhist temples in the Tohoku region, Zuiganji.
