Experience Details
Over a decade since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the town of Minamisanriku in Miyagi is well on the road to recovery. The community’s spirit of perseverance has inspired nation-wide support and new initiatives like reconstruction tourism. Come join this regional revitalization tour and experience the food culture of Minamisanriku for yourself, while supporting local producers.
Hop aboard a boat and glide across the water, breathing in salty sea air as you gaze across at the oyster farm getting closer and closer in the distance. At the aquafarm, lend a hand to the fishermen as they harvest the oysters. Right there on the boat, you’ll crack one open—the freshest oyster you’ll ever have!
Back at shore, visit a winery and start shucking oysters to prepare for lunch. As your lunch is being cooked, you’ll tour the winery. In addition to learning about the local wine, you’ll also hear stories about the strength of the community and their efforts to revitalize the town.
After the winery tour, sit down to lunch. The dishes are made from your freshly-harvested oysters and other local ingredients, like mutton from sheep that are fed a very specific diet of wakame seaweed. Paired with delicious wine, this meal showcases the best of Minamisanriku.
