A fishing town in the Tohoku region, Shiogama serves as a major fishing harbor in Japan with superior access to some of the largest tuna catches. Specializing in fresh maguro (tuna), there are many high-end seafood restaurants in the city serving delicious, freshly-cut sushi, making this coastal city in Miyagi Prefecture a local and delicious foodie heaven! The town also has a long culture of sake brewing, namely with 3 major sake breweries that are linked to the sacred Shiogama Shrine in the center of the city. Join this Shiogama Sake Tasting with Sushi Pairing to learn about locally-made sake and how to appreciate its finer qualities. Also, enjoy Japanese sake with a fresh sushi lunch. This Shiogama Sake Tasting with Sushi Pairing starts off with a walking tour, exploring the ancient grounds of Shiogama Shrine overlooking the city. Learn about the history of this Shinto shrine (established over 1200 years ago) and the city of Shiogama from a local guide. Next, you’ll listen to an in-depth lecture on sake appreciation in English, learning about the history and culture of local sake, including its deep connection to the local shrine (40 minutes). Once you’ve become a sake expert, you’ll head to a local sake brewery for some sake tasting and souvenir shopping for some delicious sake. Finally, you’ll enjoy a sushi lunch, pairing delicious Shiogama sake with different types of sushi.

On the east coast of the Tohoku region, Shiogama is a fishing town located between the capital of Miyagi Prefecture, Sendai, and Matsushima, home to one of Japan’s three most beautiful views. An ideal access point to see this natural wonder, Shiogama offers sightseeing cruises to Matsushima, which consists of a picturesque bay filled with hundreds of iconic islets clad with Japanese pine trees. From 200 steps above, the central 1200-year-old Shiogama Shrine overlooks the ocean filled with its rare cherry blossom trees, while the large Shiogama Fish Market peeps from across the city.
