Visit Volcan Wines and its wine museum, located in Vothonas, Santorini, on the road to Kamari Beach. This charming family business has been operating since 1880. While modern stainless steel machinery has replaced traditional wooden tools, the wines are still produced in a classic style. The facility features an impressive underground museum, situated 8 meters below the surface and stretching 300 meters long. It showcases the history of wine and the lives of Santorini’s farmers from 1660 to 1950 through lifelike exhibits, animatronics, and an automated audio tour.

Wine Museum Koutsogiannopoulos

The wine museum is located in a natural cave eight meters below ground. It is the only one of its kind in Greece and it took the Koutsoyannopoulos family, fourth-generation wine makers, 21 years to build it. The visitors of the museum have the opportunity to learn about the history of wine and the life of vine-growers in Santorini since the 1660s through an automatic audio guide, available in 14 languages or a guidebook, available in 22 languages. At the end of the tour, wines produced in Koutsoyannopoulos winery are available for tasting in the winery’s tasting room.

Very beautiful experience.

Very nice visit followed by a tasting of excellent wines. An astonishingly dense museum; explanations about the unique viticulture techniques of Santorini. Our tasting guide, Angela, was lovely and shared many restaurant recommendations on the island with us.

All right, well worth a visit!

At the end of April 2026, we didn't need to book. Coming from Fira, this is the road to the airport. The museum is about 2 km away. The KTEL bus can drop us off on request, if not too many people. Several tasting packages of good local wine, of choice. Very clean, well organized, fun and informative museum. Very welcoming and professional staff. It's worth a visit and we can ask for a taxi back...

Cave wine tour

This tour is a must do! The way the museum is layed out provides a visual lens of how wine production was made and the transition from primitive to modern production. The wine tasting was also a good touch to cap off the tour. Delicious!

Cave museum a nice walk through.

The Cave museum is self guided with audio devices rather than a tour, which is why I gave it a 4 instead of 5. If you love antiques and winemakers history, this is an interesting walk through. Wine tasting after the tour was fun and interactive. A nice way to use 2 hours in Santorini.
