Experience Details

Kyoto prides itself with clear tap water, due to the vicinity with lake Biwa. However, a few hours by train from Kyoto you can find a more-than-worthy opponent. Leave Kyoto and experience the traditional vibes and slow-living feeling of a small village with a unique feature. Harie is home to an ancient and peculiar costume: spring water gets directly at each and every home of the village and it is still used by many residents as kitchen sink and well. Meet a local English speaking guide and let yourself on a peaceful journey to the strains of running water.

Under the guidance of your local cicerone, you get the coveted chance to enter the houses of those inhabitants whose families have been making daily-use of the crystal-clear spring water to this day. You’ll learn about kabata, water springs, and the culture around them.

Acquire deeper knowledge about this village learning more about its produce at a local sake brewery founded in 1865. Water and rice are fundamental ingredients for sake brewing and the village undoubtedly knows its stuff when it comes to freshwater. Explore the cellars and barrels where rice wine is produced and don’t miss out on the velvety sake tasting!

Part with your guide at the station and take the opportunity to stroll around lake Biwa, or just go back to your hotel satisfied with the authentic local experience you just had.
