We had a great time on the tour. Asami very knowledgeable and generous in sharing information. It definitely felt like we were having an authentic experience, which was a welcome break after the craziness of the big cities. I’d highly recommend taking the tour, tasting the delicious locally brewed soy sauce and sake, and enjoying learning about the history of the town.

What an amazing experience! We had such a fun time with Ryo, our guide, who showed us around her home town of Kinomoto. One of our desires for our trip to Japan was to get out a bit from the city and explore/experience the more ‘authentic’ version of the country - this tour wonderfully checked that box. Ryo introduced us to a number of humble yet powerful local women in the area that brew soy sauce and sake, and even introduced us to a fermentation master at a local Temple! One of the women we were introduced to is one of the first female Sake brewers in Japan and the first female brewer in 13 generations (490 years)!!! We also learned how small of a world it really is - our guide studied abroad during high school and went to the school right near my wife’s childhood home. Having studied abroad, Ryo’s English was naturally excellent, so it made communicating with those we were introduced to on our tour so much more fruitful and informative. Thanks so much for the opportunity to experience Kinomoto!

Discover Traditional Shiga Cuisine

Embark on a culinary journey to Shiga, a region in Japan renowned for its picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Shiga is not only a feast for the eyes but also a delectable destination for your palate. The local cuisine reflects the area's history and access to fresh ingredients from Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake. Whether you are a foodie eager to explore authentic Japanese flavors or a traveler looking to immerse in the local culture, Shiga's food experiences offer something unique for everyone.

In Shiga, you will encounter a variety of traditional dishes that are a harmonious blend of flavors and techniques refined over generations. One must-try delicacy is the Omi beef, regarded as one of the top three wagyu brands in Japan, famous for its tender texture and rich marbling. Pair this succulent beef with local sake or tea for a complete culinary experience.

Another highlight of Shiga's gastronomy is the abundance of fresh seafood sourced directly from Lake Biwa. Delve into dishes such as funazushi, a fermented sushi offering a distinctive taste that dates back over a thousand years. Though an acquired taste, it's a must for seasoned food adventurers.

Dine in Shiga's Unique Settings

As much as the food is a highlight in Shiga, the setting in which you enjoy your meal is equally memorable. Many dining experiences in Shiga take place in traditional settings such as Izakayas, which are informal Japanese pubs offering a wide range of small dishes similar to tapas. These venues are perfect for those looking to try a bit of everything and experience a lively local atmosphere.

If you prefer a more intimate setting, consider booking a traditional kaiseki dinner. Kaiseki is a multi-course Japanese meal offering a balance of taste, texture, and presentation. in Shiga, these dinners often use seasonal and regional ingredients, providing diners with an authentic taste of the region. The experience is as much about aesthetic presentation and dining etiquette as it is about taste, often held in serene surroundings that reflect Shiga's natural beauty.

Hands-On Culinary Workshops

For those who prefer a more interactive food experience, Shiga offers a variety of workshops and classes that allow you to dive into the art of Japanese cooking. These hands-on sessions are perfect for both beginners and seasoned cooks looking to learn new skills and gain deeper insight into the techniques that make Japanese cuisine so revered globally.

Join a sushi making class where you'll learn the precise art of crafting beautiful and delicious sushi rolls, or participate in a soba noodle workshop that will guide you through the process of creating noodles from scratch. These experiences not only enhance your cooking skills but also provide fascinating insights into the cultural significance of the dishes you create.

Overall, Shiga's food experiences go beyond just eating and drinking. They offer an opportunity to connect with the local culture, understand the traditions, and appreciate the artistry involved in food preparation. By engaging all your senses, these culinary adventures in Shiga promise to leave you with unforgettable memories and a newfound appreciation for Japanese cuisine.
