Groot Drakenstein Prison
Nelson Mandela, a central figure in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, was arrested multiple times and endured extensive periods of imprisonment. His incarceration spanned over 27 years, during which he was held in various facilities, including Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison, and Victor Verster Prison.
In 1988, Mandela was transferred to Victor Verster Prison, located near Paarl and Franschhoek in the Western Cape. During his 14-month stay, he resided in a private house within the prison compound, a period that marked the final phase of his imprisonment. This house, now known as "Madiba House," has been preserved as a South African National Heritage Site.
Mandela's release from prison on February 11, 1990, was a pivotal moment in South Africa's history, leading to the dismantling of apartheid and the establishment of a democratic society.
