Experience Details

Remmy started the Eco Camp (located 150 km from Dar es Salaam and 45 km from Morogoro) as a space to accommodate volunteers who came to work on different projects - safe water, education, solar energy, reforestation and health care. It is the perfect place if you enjoy nature, rural life and are keen to learn more about the local communities! The food served at the camp is organic, they use fruits and vegetables from their own garden, whenever possible. Start your experience with a tour of the local market to buy a few ingredients. Then join Remmy and his family in the cooking area for your community cooking class, where you will prepare three dishes in a 2-hour class. After cooking, sit down to share the meal you helped prepare.

What You’ll Experience

This is a unique opportunity to explore community, culture and cuisine. The Eco Camp is a perfect place if you enjoy nature, rural life and are keen to learn more about the local communities! It is surrounded by Mikumi National Park and located in Lukwambe - a small village on the bank of Ngerengere River. After you've been picked up from your central Dar es Salaam hotel you will drive to the neighborhood village market (Eco Camp is 150 km from Dar es Salaam). This is the market where all the local villagers go to buy fruits, spices, corn flour, wheat flour, fresh banana, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes etc. At the market, Remmy will act as your guide while he introduces you to locally grown ingredients. Buy a few vegetables or herbs and drive or walk (1km) to the camp for your cooking class. Cooking is a community affair where everyone comes together to prep and cook fresh meals from scratch. Traditional cooking methods are used and you will help prepare three dishes in a 2-hour class. After cooking, sit down on mats on the floor or at the table and share the meal you helped prepare. All the food served at the camp is organic, seasonal and freshly cooked!
