Prepare an amazing Sri Lankan meal.


The setting for the cooking experience is spectacular.


You prepare your meal in a traditional outdoor kitchen at the junction of a river and a canal location connects you with history. For hundreds of years, spices were transported on barges that along the river and canal where you cook.


The location also connects you with nature. From the outdoor kitchen and the dining pavilion, you have a spectacular panoramic view.


The experience provides a fun, hands-on way to explore Sri Lankan heritage. As you cook, you use authentic tools including an antique grinding stone, cooking utensils made from coconut shells, and locally made terracotta pots.


You also learn about the spices that made Sri Lanka so important in the spice trade and that make Sri Lankan cuisine so distinctive.


In this class, you will cook without chilis so everyone can enjoy the food.

What You’ll Experience

In this activity, you learn how to prepare a traditional Sri Lankan meal. All the dishes you prepare are vegetarian. You learn authentic rustic cooking techniques and use an antique grinding stone, cooking utensils made from coconut shells, and locally made terra cotta pots. We introduce you to the ingredients and how spices are prepared. If the weather is good, you cook in an outdoor kitchen located on the Maha Oya River. After the cooking is finished, sit down and enjoy the meal in a pavilion by the river. As sunset approaches, watch hundreds of bats migrate across the river. We endeavor to make this one of the happiest elements of your holiday.
