The ruins of Pompeii are an open air museum where visitors can step back in time and discover a city buried in volcanic ash until its rediscovery in 1748. Visitors experience the city much as it existed more than 2000 years ago. Explore Vesuvio, the giant volcano dominating the Bay of Naples. Drive up to 3000 feet through the old crater, then hike the final 25 minutes along a zigzagging path of volcanic gravel to the summit. From the top, peer into the vast crater of Vesuvius and enjoy breathtaking views of the Sorrento Peninsula and the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida.
