Experience Details

Best known for its beautiful wisteria curtains at Ashikaga Flower Park, greenhouses bursting with juicy strawberries and vast shopping options at the Sano Premium Outlets, no visit to Sano City in Tochigi Prefecture is complete without a delicious, steamy bowl of Sano ramen. Made with airy, chewy hand-cut noodles, cooked in thermal hot spring water, and served with a clear, light soy sauce broth sprinkled with flavorful toppings, it is worth traveling to Sano from Tokyo just to taste this unique ramen — or even better, to make it yourself!

In this unique experience, master the art of ramen-making guided by a real chef. Your host will pick you up from Sano Station and drive you to the ramen restaurant where the experience will take place. Here, you’ll learn about the history of Sano ramen, its cultural significance for the local community, and what sets it apart from other kinds of ramen. You’ll then get hands-on making the noodles using a bamboo pole, a technique known as “aotakeuchi,” which is said to improve the texture of the noodles and is guaranteed to bring out a few laughs, too. After kneading and cutting the noodles, your host will guide you through cutting them. You’ll also prepare gyoza dumplings. to complete the meal.

This experience can also be made halal, vegan or vegetarian-friendly — just let your host know what option you need upon booking, and let them take care of the rest! After eating, your host will take you back to Sano Station where you can continue exploring the magnificent sights of the city on your own.
