Description
Good to Know
Smokvara has a rich and intense sweet flavor, with a pronounced aroma of ripe figs. The texture is thick, soft, and slightly sticky, while the dough absorbs the syrup it soaks in, giving it juiciness. The taste reminds of traditional homemade cakes, with a prominent natural sweetness of the figs and a subtle caramel-like note.

Making Smokvara at Mehmedbašić House
Prepare a traditional Herzegovinian smokvara using an old family recipe. Travel back in time and taste the sweet flavor of rich Herzegovinian culinary heritage with smokvara, or "fig cake."
For Azra, your hostess, this beloved dessert represents a nostalgic journey to her childhood in Stolac, where the pleasant aroma of her grandmother's kitchen filled the rooms. Azra's deep connection with her grandmother, the cornerstone of her upbringing, inspired her to share this precious family recipe with the world.
You will enjoy cooking in the Mehmedbašić House, a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina with over 200 years of history. This house was once the residence of Junuz-aga Mehmedbašić, who generously donated it as a waqf (charitable endowment). The historical house is now a hostel, inviting guests to experience .
The Experience
In the peaceful garden and traditional sitting rooms, you have a unique opportunity to prepare your own Herzegovinian smokvara. Let Azra guide you through the process while sharing stories about old and new Herzegovinian customs, immersing yourself in the timeless traditions of this Mediterranean region.
