Experience Details
Shimokitazawa is known as Tokyo’s hipster haunt, a place to go thrifting for vintage clothing and flip through boxes of vinyl records. It celebrates all things retro, and was once home to old-school movie theaters in Suzunari Yokocho (Suzunari Alley), which have been refurbished and now houses around 15 tiny bars but maintains its Showa era character. There’s no better place to find your new favorite thrifted piece, see a live show, or pick up a film camera than Shimokitazawa, and the personality of this Tokyo neighborhood shines through its bar and food scene in the evening. The Hipster Shimokitazawa Food Tour will take you along to the local spots that have been around for decades and give Shimokitazawa that chill character it is so well-known for.
First, you’ll take a trip to Suzunari Yokocho, a relic of the Showa era, which houses several tiny bars in the building that was once a theater, the origin of Shimokitazawa’s art scene. Then, you can enjoy some beverages and taste local Shimokitazawa food during this Hipster Shimokitazawa Food Tour. You’ll scope out a cool local record shop and listen to some tunes, visit a kitschy bar that’s a work of art in and of itself (it looks like a cottage from a fantasy storybook), then indulge in some tasty soy bean donuts that are very mildly sweet, fresh, and delicious.

Experience Location
To the west of Shibuya is the little bohemian village of Shimokitazawa (or “Shimokita”). It's a laid-back hipster district teeming with vintage fashion and second-hand retailers, trendy bars, and handmade or organic markets. Shimokita is also home to excellent coffee brewed in its dozens of alternative cafes, fueling much of the free-flowing creativity amongst its tiny alternative theaters, live music venues, and independent artist studios. Once a hub for hippie youth, Shimokitazawa is also renowned for offering a lot of vegan and vegetarian restaurant options.
