Experience Details

Kampala’s food culture is built around everyday cooking. Rather than focusing on restaurants, you’ll get to know the real Kampala by exploring the markets, street grills, and neighbourhood eateries where locals really eat.

With 12+ tastings across multiple stops, you’ll move from market snacks like Rolex and sambuzas to staple dishes centred around matoke, greens, and groundnut sauce, before finishing with slower, more traditional meals.

The setting plays a big role. Bugolobi is a local neighbourhood, and visiting it with a knowledgeable guide helps you navigate where to go, what to order, and how these places operate.

This isn’t about fine dining, it's an authentic look at Kampala's food scene through the eyes of a local tastemaker guide.

What You’ll Experience

1

Kampala

Our Kampala food tour offers guests a culinary experience carefully curated food adventure, led by our team of Kampala tastemakers. Before we get started, our tour reflects the local cuisine, and the limitations of street food vendors and local eateries mean we cannot cater for every dietary restriction. Here's an honest appraisal for the tour, so no-one is disappointed: ✘ Unsuitable for vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or halal diets as the tastings would be very limited. ✔ Gluten and lactose intolerance, mild peanut allergies, and no seafood diets are possible though some tastings do not have alternatives available and the menu would be more limited.
✔ Suitable for no pork diets

Kampala

Explore Kampala’s food culture on a 4-hour lunch tour through Bugolobi, with 12+ tastings from markets, street grills, and local eateries.

This isn’t about fine dining, it’s a moveable feast focused on the dishes beloved by locals.
Start with simple staples like mandazi and sweet cookies paired with spiced chai, before heading into Bugolobi Market for street favourites such as the Rolex and sambuzas.

Along the way, you’ll explore matoke, a key part of Ugandan cooking, prepared in different ways with greens, beans, and groundnut sauce. The tour continues at a local grill for charcoal-cooked chicken, followed by richer dishes like smoked fish in peanut sauce served with traditional sides. You’ll finish with a sit-down meal including goat dry fry, cassava, greens, and hibiscus juice.
