A local Osaka neighborhood, Tenma lies to the east of the Kita (north) district. It’s named after Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, a major Shinto shrine worshipping the God of scholarship which plays host to one of Japan’s 3 top festivals, the annual Tenjin Matsuri. Said to be the longest shotengai in Japan, Tenma is home to Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street which spans over 2 kilometers, featuring over 600 shopfronts. Emerging from narrow streets of the station’s north exit, hole-in-the-wall bars and local izakayas burst into life come nightfall, with more upscale restaurants a little further afield.
