Experience Details
Experience a vision of sumptuously-dressed performers wearing elaborate kimono and a layer of white makeup, with graceful moves from an ancient past. Maiko are apprentice geisha, called “geiko” in the Kansai area, yet they are already very professional artists who have mastered the arts of dancing, singing, and playing shamisen.
Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, is studded with temples and shrines, and is home to Japan old town, Gion, known as one of Kyoto’s geisha districts. This is the ideal spot for attending such a beautiful show. With small hands poking out of long sleeves, dainty micro-steps under heavy kimono, and vibrant hair accessories, the group of performing maiko will enchant you with an otherworldly experience.
While you sit back, hooked and happy, you’ll be served some delicious bites. Participants can either choose to munch on a beautifully arranged Japanese bento lunch box (Wareshinobu plan), or some traditional snacks and sweets perfect for a cup of matcha tea (Ofuku plan).
Both maiko and geiko are rarely seen walking outside of their Okiya lodgings, so stumbling upon one is quite rare for tourists. Take the chance to know more about their traditional culture after the performance, during the English presentation. Finally, you’ll get closer to maiko with some face-to-face time for questions and answers, and take photos together.
This experience is a whirlwind of sensations and vivid colors that will set your head spinning and leave you with beautiful memories, and a souvenir!
