Experience Details

Explore the Immigrant, Labor, and Civil Rights History of Bay View through a gentle walk in this charming neighborhood of Milwaukee. Emeritus History Professor Tim Thering will transport you back to three different time periods that dramatically shaped the Bay View neighborhood, the city of Milwaukee, and the nation.


You will learn about the Bay View Massacre that tragically ended Milwaukee’s immigrant workers’ struggle for the 8-hour day. You will hear about how Anarchist Italian immigrants in the neighborhood battled with local authorities during World War I. Finally, you will discover how the son of Bay View grocers, Father James Groppi, helped to lead the Milwaukee Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.


The tour includes visiting several iconic businesses in this tightly packed corner of Bay View, Milwaukee. Food and most drinks are included in the price.

Wisconsin State Historical Marker 275: Bay View's Rolling Mill

Professor T (or other qualified guide) will meet guests at the historical marker and tell the history of Milwaukee's workers' struggle, especially Polish immigrant workers, for the 8-hour day that ended in the tragic Bay View massacre in 1886.

Professor T (or other qualified guide) will explain how Italian immigrants who were anarchists clashed with local authorities during World War I at this point and how the explosive aftermath shook the nation.

G. Groppi Food Market

As guests are guided through this historic Italian grocery store, Professor T (or other qualified guide) will explain how Father James Groppi, one of the main leaders of Milwaukee Civil Rights movement of the 1960s was born and raised in the food market. Professor T will purchase Italian delicacies at the store that guests will snack on at the next location.

Puddler's Hall | Bay View’s Historic Tavern

At this former union hall, guests will learn about the Milwaukee Civil Rights Movement for open housing in 1967/68 that was in part led by Father James Groppi. As guests listen to the story, they will snack on Italian delicacies from Groppi's Food Market and enjoy a drink from Puddler's Hall.

Three Brothers

Guests will enjoy a delicious Serbian dinner at this James Beard Foundation Award winning restaurant. Originally a Schiltz tied house, the historic building was purchased by the Radicevic family, immigrants from Serbia, in 1956 and has been serving traditional Serbian dishes ever since. The meal, including a burek appetizer, and one drink are included with the tour. Other drinks may be purchased by guests on their own. The restaurant only accepts cash or checks.
