Experience Details

Rather than recreating a restaurant barbecue, this class introduces guests to the Dominican patio barbecue tradition in the setting where informal cooking and social meals naturally take place: a local home.

The experience is built around the process of preparing a Dominican barbecue, from seasoning and preparing the ingredients to managing the grill and serving the finished food. Don't simply watch a chef cook; participate in the preparation and grilling while learning practical techniques you can recreate at home.

The menu combines grilled Dominican favorites with traditional sides and sauces, creating a complete meal rather than a series of isolated tastings. The class finishes around the patio table, where cooking naturally becomes conversation and a shared meal.

What You’ll Experience

Join your local host in Santo Domingo for a relaxed 3 and a half hour Dominican barbecue cooking class in the patio of a local home. Together you'll prepare a selection of grilled meats, traditional side dishes, sauces, and local accompaniments while learning how Dominican families prepare food for informal gatherings. The class focuses on practical barbecue techniques rather than restaurant-style cooking. Your host will show you how to season and marinate the ingredients, prepare the fire, control the heat, and grill each item according to its texture and cooking time. As you cook, your host explains the role of grilled foods in Dominican gatherings, weekend meals, family celebrations, and informal get-togethers. The focus is on practical techniques and everyday food traditions rather than formal culinary instruction. Once everything is ready, sit together at the patio table and enjoy the barbecue you've prepared with the rest of the group.
