Join a private morning tour to witness the lively tuna auction in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture. A friendly local guide will either pick you up at your accommodation or meet you directly at the JF Katsuura Seafood Market to begin the experience.


This tour provides a unique glimpse into the tuna auction and the intimate connection between the sea and the local community. Visit the JF Katsuura Seafood Market and oversee as seasoned professionals inspect each tuna before it is auctioned.


The pace is fast, and the atmosphere is intense, reflecting a tradition that plays a vital role in the town’s daily life and economy. Throughout the tour, your guide shares stories about Nachikatsuura’s history and the people whose lives are shaped by the ocean.


The tour typically runs from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. If you prefer a slightly later start, please let us know your preferred time when booking.


After the auction, enjoy a classic Katsuura breakfast. The meal includes three types of sashimi, featuring two kinds of fresh tuna, served with rice, seasonal side dishes made with local vegetables, and a warm bowl of miso soup.


Guests are warmly welcomed to the coastal town of Nachikatsuura for a memorable morning shaped by tradition, craftsmanship, and local flavors.

Good To Know

  • Please wear warm clothing and non-slip shoes for early morning tours
  • This tour does not include access to the second-floor viewing area of the first saling area
  • In Nachi-Katsuura, many family-run restaurants may close unexpectedly, even with reservations. As a result, the breakfast location and menu may occasionally change
  • Transfers to and from your local accommodation on foot. If needed, a taxi can be arranged. The fare is metered and payable directly to the driver
  • If you use a wheelchair or require mobility assistance, please let us know in advance so we can ensure a safe and enjoyable tour for you

Nachi-Katsuura is a small port town on the southeast tip of Wakayama Prefecture. It’s known for relaxing hot springs and fresh tuna auctions at the local fish market. Get up early to see the tuna auctions live, or take your time and sample deliciously fresh tuna at one of the town’s many sushi and kaisendon restaurants. Located just 40 minutes from Nachi-Katsuura by bus is Seigantoji, a famous Buddhist temple. The temple boasts beautiful views of its three-story pagoda with the thundering Nachi Waterfall, Japan’s tallest waterfall, as the backdrop.
