Where the grill and the pot meet in the warmth of a private room.
Restaurant Details
Korean culinary tradition runs deep in Japan, woven into the fabric of evening dining culture across the country. In Iwaki, a coastal city in Fukushima Prefecture shaped by the Pacific and an industrial resilience all its own, Chego Iwaki Ekimae occupies the second floor of the station-front building — a warm threshold between the day's last train and the night ahead.
Step inside and the atmosphere shifts. The dining room is arranged entirely in private rooms, from intimate two-person spaces with sunken seating to larger enclosures suited to gatherings. Wood tones and low lighting draw the room inward, and the sound of iron grates and simmering broth settles in like a familiar rhythm. This is a place designed for time well spent.
The kitchen draws on two pillars of Korean cuisine, each distinct in character. Samgyeopsal — pork belly aged for texture and depth, scored and presented bone-in — arrives at the table raw and transforms at your hand over the grill, rendered crisp at the edges and served with fresh greens, house-made kimchi, and a choice of dipping sauces. On the other side of the menu, sundubu — silken tofu simmered in a vivid, spice-layered broth — arrives bubbling in cast iron, available in seafood, pork rib, or beef tripe variations. The heat level is yours to choose.
Alongside these centerpieces, the kitchen offers a wider range of Korean small plates: marinated raw dishes, soy-cured seafood, griddled pancakes studded with shellfish and scallions. Course options pair the grill and the pot, and drinks flow freely under an extended all-you-can-drink arrangement.
A meal at Chego lingers in the warmth of the room and the slow satisfaction of something honestly made.
