Overlooking Japan’s oldest fountain in Kanazawa, this 100-year-old Japanese restaurant serves exquisite meals fit for samurai lords.

Restaurant Details

Nestled within the historic Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa, Kenrokutei invites diners to experience a culinary journey rooted deeply in regional heritage.

The restaurant overlooks Japan’s oldest fountain that allows guests to reimagine the era of Tsunanori Maeda, the feudal lord of the Kaga Clan, who originally moved his cooking house to Kanazawa Castle in 1676. This set the stage for Kenrokuen Garden, and the inception of Kenrokutei.

Fast forward to the modern era, fourth-generation owner Naoto Uda passionately preserves Kenrokutei's storied past while ensuring warm hospitality. Following a renovation in 2022, the restaurant was further helmed by a young Kyoto-trained chef who made sure each dish at Kenrokutei is a masterpiece, meticulously crafted to evoke the essence of local flavors and traditions.

From breakfast to dinner, guests are treated to a culinary journey inspired by the region's bounty. Start your day with a hearty breakfast featuring local grilled fish, seasonal vegetables and earthenware-served porridge — or opt for the famed soba topped with jibuni, a local Kanazawa cuisine of simmered duck meat coated in flour.

For special occasions, opt for the eight-course banquet plan, which includes an indulgent all-you-can-drink selection of local sake, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages.
