Okamezushi
Michelin-starred sushi (Michelin Guide 2017) in suburban Sendai, which feels like visiting the home of a (very talented) friend.
Restaurant Details
Located in the relaxed Yaotome area of Sendai, this restaurant has only two private rooms in which to seat diners. These are traditional tatami rooms with hanging scrolls, ceramic decorations, and a pit-style hearth with a kettle over it.
The setting gives the feeling of sitting in a traditional Japanese home, but as proved by the Michelin star this particular household held in 2017, the food on offer is miles above standard home cooking. The sushi chef here gathers premium toppings from around the country, presenting his fresh seafood in a wooden box before serving.
His menu adheres to tradition to create some exciting historic dishes like kanpyo-maki — a dried gourd sushi roll. It requires a labor intensive process to soak, boil, and marinate the gourd to get it ready for the dish, which is why you won’t often find this extremely traditional dish on modern menus.
