Carrara marble, known to the Romans as Luna marble or marmor lunense, is a prized white or blue-grey marble used for centuries in sculpture and architectural decoration. It has been quarried since Roman times in the rugged mountains above Carrara, in the province of Massa and Carrara. The quarries are vast, open-air scars on the mountainside—monumental white wounds carved into steep, wild slopes, where tiny human figures move enormous blocks of stone. For over 2,000 years, nature and human ingenuity have clashed and cooperated here, producing the raw material for masterpieces found in palaces, piazzas, and private homes around the world. In the afternoon, you'll visit one of the area’s most celebrated wineries: Ca’ Lunae, founded by Paolo Bosoni in 1966. Continuing a family legacy rooted in Ligurian agriculture, Bosoni brings together tradition and innovation in every step of the winemaking process. The estate, located in the heart of Lunigiana between Sarzana (Liguria) and Carrara (Tuscany), sits within the renowned Colli di Luni DOC—a designation recognized since Roman times for its exceptional viticulture. A Truly Unforgettable Experience at the Carrara Marble Quarries

The Carrara marble quarries were absolutely breathtaking! Driving into the mountains and standing inside those vast white caverns felt otherworldly. Our guide was fantastic—knowledgeable, passionate, and full of fascinating stories about Michelangelo and the centuries of history behind the marble. The views of the Apuan Alps were stunning, and seeing how marble is still extracted today was so impressive. This tour is a perfect mix of adventure, culture, and beauty—I can’t recommend it enough!

Unique place at the border between Tuscany and Liguria,a real heaven of building and decorating materials at the Marble quarries of Carrara…. Being there actually gives you a feeling of creation and inspires your creativity and imagination…really an amazing experience!! All followed up by a wine and food experience which was excellent;specially the Vermentino !! Highly recommend this tour!!

Beauty and taste at the highest level!

From start to finish, this tour exceeded all of my expectations! I learned so much at the marble quarries and have such a newfound respect for the work they do. Then, the winery we went to for lunch and tasting blew my mind! The wine was perfectly paired with their exquisite food. They served one of the best shrimp dishes, I have had in a very long time!

Fantastic Tour!!!!!!

Cannot give this tour enough stars. Daria was punctual, attentive, knowledgeable and accommodating. She and the guide/driver at the marble mountains gave us in depth history and information for the entire trip. The guide/driver expertly guided us through the entire area and modified the tour for our wants and needs. One of the true highlights of our trip to Tuscany.
