Make the most of Japan's fleeting cherry blossoms by joining this Kyoto walking tour. On this seasonal experience, guests will explore Demachiyanagi, an area that first-time visitors often overlook but that has much to offer. Visit Simogamo Shrine and its intriguing satellite, the Kawai Shrine, and the fun local shopping arcade Masugata Shotengai. This area, where Kyoto's Kamo and Takano rivers meet, still draws residents and visitors for its many tasty opportunities and historical significance. Escape the crowd and go beyond Kyoto's main attractions. While taking in the spring air, guests are encouraged to slow down and enjoy a beautiful area of Kyoto. At some points during your neighborhood stroll, you'll get to see one of Kyoto's famous fire symbol mountains, Mt. Daimonji, and the dominating peak of north Kyoto, Mt. Hiei, the summit of which can be reached from Demachiyanagi Station. It's a perfect extension to a day's adventure for those keen to continue their exploration after the tour ends.

Experience Location

The Demachiyanagi area opens out onto the Kamogawa River. Nestled across the water are stone turtles, whose backs you can hop along to head toward the Imperial Palace grounds. The 2000-year-old Shimogamo Shrine shines through lush greenery surrounding the sanctuary, while the humble Chionji Temple attracts visitors with its monthly flea market. With a number of cozy restaurants and stores, Demachiyanagi is also a student hub, where you’ll find families and students from local universities lounging by the wide riverbanks in fine weather.
