Experience Details
Kyoto is a paradise for vegan and vegetarian travelers. Thanks to the city’s spiritual heritage, traditional Buddhist meals free of animal products are widely available, and local produce is fresh, flavorful, and packed with nutrients.
But exploring Kyoto’s food scene on your own can be tricky, especially if you’re short on time or don’t speak Japanese. That’s where your guide comes in, helping you enjoy the best vegan eats while discovering the city’s culture and history.
In this experience, you’ll explore central Kyoto with an English-speaking guide, stopping at local shops to learn about traditional arts and crafts and, of course, to try delicious vegan foods. From savory to sweet, you’ll sample a variety of snacks, stroll along historic streets, visit a traditional townhouse, and finish with a decadent meal at a unique vegan restaurant that transforms comfort food favorites into healthy, organic, and additive-free dishes.
The experience begins at Shinsen-en Garden near Nijo Castle, where you’ll meet your guide and start the walking tour. You’ll visit a traditional townhouse and local businesses, including shops selling washi Japanese paper, recycled kimono, and pottery.
Along the way, you’ll taste vegan treats at four shops. Offerings vary by season and availability but may include arare crackers, vegetable tempura, apple candy, traditional wagashi sweets, ice cream, or other local specialties.
After about two hours of exploring and tasting, you’ll relax at a stylish vegan restaurant, enjoying healthy takes on classic comfort foods like burgers and pizza, all made with organic ingredients and no artificial additives. It’s the perfect way to end your culinary walk through Kyoto.
This walking tour is ideal for travelers who want to experience Kyoto’s history, culture, and traditional craftsmanship while enjoying the city’s diverse vegan offerings.
