Experience Details
Join Shoran, a certified Master Shodo Instructor, for a unique matcha calligraphy lesson, the only one of its kind in Japan.
This hands-on experience combines history, technique, and creativity, letting you explore Japanese calligraphy in a fun and memorable way. The class takes place in Shizuoka, just an eight-minute walk from the station.
Your day begins in a cozy cafe, where you’ll meet your instructor and get an introduction to the history of matcha calligraphy and essential techniques.
Watch a demonstration as Shoran shows how to create beautiful strokes with matcha, and then dive into your matcha calligraphy lesson. Practice writing your name or kanji characters under her guidance.
Next, create a hanging scroll to take home as a keepsake, a perfect reminder of your experience. There will also be a photo opportunity with your artwork, and you can ask any questions you like about the art form.
Shoran’s journey is as inspiring as her art. Influenced by her grandfather’s calligraphy school, she is a certified Master Shodo Instructor and Handwriting Appraiser. After a career as a cabin attendant for ANA, she now teaches, creates, and performs calligraphy globally. Her passion for preserving and sharing the beauty of Japanese calligraphy shines through in every lesson.
Japanese calligraphy, or shodo, is a traditional art form rooted in Chinese characters, typically using sumi ink made from soot.
In this class, your brush will create strokes in a unique, green hue (matcha ink), making this a one-of-a-kind experience that blends tradition, mindfulness, and creativity.
