Sombai is a family-run Cambodian rice liqueur workshop in the Wat Damnak area of Siem Reap, making hand-painted bottles of infused rice wine since 2012. Wondering what there is to do in Siem Reap other than Angkor Wat? This short guided tour takes you through the working distillery, the maceration room where fruit and spices steep for up to a year, and the upstairs showroom of infusion jars. Then you sit down and taste. You will try 10 flavours of infused rice liqueur and 3 alcoholic jams, with local snacks alongside. Bestsellers are Lemon and Lemongrass, Passion and Spices, and Banana and Cinnamon. The rice wine is bought from families in the Cambodian countryside. Every bottle is painted by hand by young Cambodian artists, and the packaging is plastic-free. Half an hour if you are busy. All evening if you are not. We are open after the temples close and into the evening, which makes this one of the easier things to do in Siem Reap at night without heading to Pub Street. Children and non-drinkers are welcome and are free of charge.

Inspired by a recipe common in traditional Khmer medicine, lemon being an excellent tonic while the infusion of lemongrass has proven anti-fungal.

Look for the red arch with the wooden house behind it, in the Wat Damnak area. Come any time between 11:00 and 20:00, there is no set start time. The tasting takes about 45 minutes and you are welcome to stay longer.

Dara the best

We saw the tasting experience on get your guide but we didn t book it. We just went there and we find the amazing Dara. Dara was so nice and a really good guy explaining all the process to make the rice wine and all the different flavours. We knew we were going to do a nice experience but Dara make it really amazing.

The great Sombai run

Sombai gives a whole other meaning to "some rice please". This rice does not need to be accompanied by Amok or Lok Lak. Sombai is the pure and flavorful essence every rice kernel has at its core, which it did not know they had it in them. Sombai distills this very essence in a beautiful and rich liqour so it can be shared among friends, companions and loved ones. Thank you, Luuk. We have read this more than once. You began with the name and ended with the people, and everything in between is the part that is hard to explain in an hour, which may be why the hour turned into two. The rice wine is not hidden under fruit and spices, it is given a year to become what it already had in it, and you picked up on that. Calling the step away from tradition something other than blasphemy is generous, and it is how we think of it too. It was a strange and lovely thing to find we had walked the same streets and only met here, and to spend an afternoon laughing with you both. Despite the shop being mid renovation, I am glad we opened it anyway. Enjoy the bottles. Groetjes.
