If you’re interested in checking out Yatai food stalls in Fukuoka, this is the way to do it! It’s also a great first-night adventure in the city because Bruce is extremely knowledgeable and shares generously. My partner and I spent 4+ hours with Bruce, and we’d do it again in a heartbeat. We walked all over the city and stopped in three different Yatai stalls, eating tapas/pintxos style. Every bite of food and each drink we tried was delicious. It was a great intro to Fukuoka/Hakata, and a perfect way to visit the Yatai stalls, which could be intimidating to navigate for the first time on your own.

Hakata yatais are WHERE IT'S AT and there isn't a better person to show you the best places to try out than Bruce. I came to know about Bruce through a Youtube video he did for Japan byFood, so I was fairly sure coming into the tour that we'd be well taken care of. And Bruce did not disappoint! The thing about yatais is that their operational hours and days can be very unpredictable, so you need a tour guide who really knows the yatai scene and is not wedded to following a specific plan or script. Our tour was set for a Sunday night, so when we met Bruce, he explained that, although he had a plan in mind, there was a good chance we'd need to improvise along the way because it was a Sunday night. He proved to be right, as we needed to pivot right from the start because the madam running the first yatai he wanted to introduce to us did not set up for the evening. We ended up hitting a total four yatais, which included Ultra C (great oden), "Riverside Restaurant" (cozy izakaya serving some righteous ramen), Tomochan (grilled skewer goodness), and finally Bar Ebi-chan (literally an awesome bar sitting in the middle of the street run by a very professional couple). We chatted, ate, drank and laughed throughout the evening. Before we knew it, we'd been touring for almost 4 hours. Time flew by so quickly. A sign of a great tour and a great tour guide. We'll see you again, Bruce!

We had such an incredible time with Bruce! Without his help my husband and I never would’ve had the courage to attempt going into the yatai stalls by ourselves. Bruce made the process very smooth and comforting. He has incredible social skills, and he’s amazing at putting everyone at ease. He was so much fun to interact with. Plus he knew all of the best spots, and all the best specialty dishes to try—it was all just so perfect! THANK YOU Bruce!! Even though we had just a short time together, we’ll never forget you and this incredible yatai tour <3 I really can’t recommend this tour enough!

What a fantastic experience. We met Bruce on a rainy evening and he still found us an excellent yatai where we enjoyed wagyu beef. Unagu (conger eel) tempura and other delicious dishes. Deciding the rain had eliminated some of our yatai choices we went hunting for other options - and found two off the hook gyoza restaurants. One was a favorite of Bruce and the other a recommendation from the Yatai chef. They were both excellent in different ways. We finished the evening with a delicious bowl of fukuoka's signature ramen and a pleasant walk home. Bruce's knowledge of all things food and Japan was impeccable and his ability to assist us in finding the best choices for our taste despite the weather was exceptional. 10 out of 10. Would recommend .

Bruce was awesome. So welcoming and knowledgeable about the area, having lived here for 40 years and counting. Not only did he bring us to Yatai stalls that were amazing, but he personally knew each and every owner like family. It really felt like going out with an old friend to all his favorite spot and introducing us to his friends. I would highly recommend and will definitely see him again when I come back to Fukuoka!

Our time with Bruce was one of the highlights of Fukuoka, and helped us fall in love with the city! Bruce has serious Anthony Bourdain vibes. We were joined by guides Tony and Toki, and together had a fantastic evening of food, history, conversation, and basking in Bruce’s clear love for the city and its people. I’m vegetarian, my spouce is not, and at each stop Bruce made sure we were both happy and taken care of. Mochi kinchaku oden, freshly stir fried vegetables, yakisoba, so many options!! Our tour was a Sunday evening, so certain stalls were closed and our plans flexed and flowed beautifully throughout the evening. It led us to a couple of unplanned yatai that were so delicious, we used the skills Bruce taught us to go back again and again on other nights. Toki even taught us the local phase for delicious, “ばりうま!” which thrilled everyone we used it on. The food was ridiculously good, and all the stalls we visited were filled with locals. Afterwards we went to Bruce’s favorite most scenic 7-Eleven in the city for the best ice cream bars to round out a phenomenal evening. We’ll treasure our memories of Fukuoka.

Bruce was an exceptional tour guide—easy going, knowledgeable, and deeply connected to the heart of Fukuoka’s yatai culture. His rapport with the yatai operators was immediately evident; it felt like we were being welcomed not just by vendors, but by friends. Some of the regulars greeted him with genuine joy, a testament to the relationships he’s built up at these establishments. Fellow travelers were impressed by his effortless Japanese, which comes as no surprise given his 40 years of living in Fukuoka. With Bruce leading the way, the experience felt less like a tour and more like an insider’s night out in the city, experiencing the original and less touristy yatai scene as well as some of the super popular spots. Just be warned, (4) yatai stalls is a lot of food!

My wife and I booked the Fukuoka Yatai Food Tour in Hakata, and it was a delightful experience that I highly recommend. Bruce met us at our hotel to start the tour and was friendly and knowledgeable, making the tour both informative and enjoyable. The variety of street food was impressive, from delicious Hakata ramen to perfectly grilled yakitori and more. Bruce takes you to the best yatai stalls and has a relationship with all of the chefs, which makes you feel welcome and well taken care of. The tour has a great atmosphere, and Bruce makes it a point to show the social side of the yatai experience as well - starting conversations with other patrons at the stalls and helping you to meet people from all over the world who are also there to enjoy the food and have fun. This helps to make the experience even more special. Bruce’s passion for Fukuoka's street food culture was infectious, adding depth to the tour. If you're in Fukuoka and want a taste of authentic local cuisine while exploring the city's lively streets, this food tour is a must-do!

Our experience was fantastic! Bruce and Tomoko were exceptional. This is a must do when in Fukuoka. We wanted to experience the Yatai stalls but felt a little intimidated doing them by ourselves so we booked the tour and we’re so glad we did! We highly recommend to book this to get the real local experience. We made two new friends who helped us enjoy delicious food and were delightful company! 10 out 10. It was an unforgettable evening and an extra-special birthday for my wife.

In particular, finding Halal Yakitori in Japan offers a unique fusion of traditional Japanese grilling with the needs of Muslim travelers. Halal Yakitori allows you to indulge in this famous Japanese street food without compromising on your dietary restrictions.

Yakitori, literally translating to "grilled chicken," involves skewering meat and grilling it over a charcoal fire. This traditional method imbues the meat with a rich, smoky flavor that is both satisfying and delicious. For those adhering to a Halal diet, it can be challenging to find this type of food, but rest assured that Japan offers a growing number of options. It's an immersive experience that combines the thrill of new flavors with the hospitality of Japanese food culture.

While Yakitori primarily features chicken, the Halal versions can also include a variety of other meats like beef and seafood, all prepared following strict Halal guidelines. Enjoy this with side dishes such as Halal Miso Soup or Tsukemono (pickled vegetables) for a well-rounded meal. Furthermore, many places offer customizable options to cater to specific tastes, ensuring everyone can enjoy this delicious food.

The Growing Popularity of Halal Yakitori

In recent years, the demand for Halal cuisine in Japan has risen, and the culinary scene has adapted accordingly.
