Mari-san talked us through the traditional method of a tea ceremony, including how they decorate the room and the symbolism of objects. She was dressed in the traditional kimono and we sat on cushions round a low table. She whisked the matcha and presented us with the tea. Then we did the same. She gave us two kinds of traditional sweets. The building is in central Beppu, easily reached on foot. The environment is not grand, it is above a cafe/shop and has the feeling of a home. The interpreter Nao -san spoke excellent English and was very pleasant. The experience took about an hour.

Excellent tour guide Timo san, who took us to all the wonderful places in Myoban and explained everything very thoroughly. The open air hot spring is extremely special and super comfortable during winter time - we had fresh fluffy light snow fall and cold temperatures, and dipping into the onsens was such a delightful experience. The steamed foods and pudding was also tasty and very special. Overall, we couldn't be happier! Thank you Timo san!

Oita Prefecture, located on Japan's Kyushu island, is renowned not just for its stunning natural beauty but also for its unique culinary traditions. When you embark on Oita food experiences, you are in for a delightful fusion of flavors, locally sourced ingredients, and traditional cooking techniques. Known for its fresh produce from both land and sea, Oita offers a diverse and rich food culture that reflects the region's harmonious relationship with nature.

One of the highlights of Oita's culinary offerings is its exceptional seafood. Because of its location along the coast, Oita enjoys abundant fresh catches daily. From sushi and sashimi featuring local fish to gourmet seafood dishes, your palate is sure to be satisfied. Make sure to try Seki Aji and Seki Saba mackerel, which are celebrated for their delicate taste and texture.

Sample Traditional Oita Dishes

While exploring Oita, tasting regional specialties should be at the top of your itinerary. Oita is famous for its yuzu kosho, a spicy paste made with yuzu peel and chili peppers. This versatile condiment adds a refreshing zesty and spicy kick to many dishes. You will often find it accompanying grilled meats and noodles.

Another must-try is Dangojiru, a comforting noodle soup that uses deliciously chewy rice flour dumplings. Typically enjoyed with a flavorful miso or soy-based broth, this dish is particularly popular during colder months and reflects the heartwarming tastes of Oita's home-cooked meals.

Don’t miss Toriten, a local favorite that features chicken tempura-style. Often served with a tangy dipping sauce, Toriten is perfect for foodies who enjoy crispy and tender bites. It’s a dish that perfectly exemplifies the innovative adaptations of western-style food in Japanese cuisine.

Experience Local Dining and More

The best way to immerse yourself in Oita’s food culture is by joining guided food tours and cooking classes, which offer an insightful look into the region's culinary traditions. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a beginner, participating in a cooking class led by local chefs can provide new skills and a deeper appreciation for Oita's ingredients and recipes. Learn how to make authentic dishes and bring a taste of Oita back home with you.

Additionally, explore the local markets and street food stalls where you can taste freshly prepared snacks and shop for unique food products. By engaging with local vendors, you can gain firsthand knowledge about the origins of ingredients and hear stories that have been passed down through generations. This interaction not only enhances your culinary adventure but also connects you with the community's heritage.

Ultimately, food experiences in Oita are about immersing yourself in a culture that cherishes its culinary roots while embracing innovation. Each meal is an opportunity to engage with tradition and taste the essence of this charming part of Japan. Whether you’re dining at a roadside stand or experiencing fine dining, Oita has the unique flavors and warm hospitality to make your gastronomic journey unforgettable.
