Tatemichiya
A punk izakaya with a subculture theme, relaxed vibes, and delicious dishes cooked up by a long-time rocker chef.
Restaurant Details
Most izakayas just go for traditional Japanese style as their inspiration, but this one goes all out with it’s own unique theme — old school, first-wave punk. Fans of The Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, or simply delicious laid-back dining will feel right at home here.
The grungy vibe might seem at odds with the upscale surroundings of Daikanyama, but that just adds to the charm of the most idiosyncratic izakaya in the area. The space is quite clearly a project of personal dedication by the owner-chef.
He was a part of the 20th century subculture himself, with the mohawk hairdo to show for it. Nowadays he stands happily at his charcoal grill to serve up great small plates for his guests. These include yakitori skewers, grilled avocado, and beef tripe stir-fried with teriyaki sauce.
The space has a grungy appeal, with graffiti on the wall drawn by customers, some famous names even adding their own touches. However, the atmosphere is totally comfortable and welcoming. The mezzanine loft space has tatami flooring if you want to relax and recline for a full evening of fine drinking and dining at one of the coolest bars in the Shibuya area.
