Old meets new at this creative tempura spot in Shijo Kawaramachi that pairs tempura, snacks and wine together for the perfect culinary trio.

Restaurant Details

Shijo Kawaramachi, located in central Kyoto, is known for its mix of historic shops thriving alongside emerging department stores — a representation of old meeting new.

This idea is reflected in Tenpu Tempura, a contemporary tempura restaurant that has integrated into the area by resurrecting an older building and turning it into a stylish space. The fit-out contains ample seating with cushions set beneath lime-washed tables, wooden beams overhead and murals of geishas on the walls.

Tenpu Tempura’s menu also mirrors this fusion of tradition and creative liberties by offering both classics and original renditions of the tempura, while championing its pairing with wine. The resulting lineup is a hearty and crowd-pleasing affair, with standouts like the “tenpu maki” — a seaweed roll filled with three types of fish sashimi, battered and fried — and a tempura take on the French dish "Oeuf Mayo," served with pickled vegetable tartare.

Further down the menu, you'll find familiar tempura favorites like shrimp, conger eel, and pumpkin. All tempura are thinly coated in a layer of batter and fried in low-cholesterol rice bran oil, giving each bite an irresistibly crispy crunch while offering a healthier alternative.

Drink enthusiasts will be delighted by the selection of fruit sours, served in large glasses branded with the letter “pu” overflowing with fresh fruit, along with a variety of other alcoholic beverages. Private rooms and the sprawling space also mean that big-group dining is welcome.
