Toraemon Kumagaya
Toraemon Kumagaya
Where the evening stretches, and the table holds you a little longer.
Restaurant Details
Saitama Prefecture sits at the northern edge of the Kanto Plain, where summer heat radiates from the asphalt and winter winds sweep down from the mountains with striking clarity. In the city of Kumagaya, known across Japan for the intensity of its seasons, Toraemon offers something that the city has always understood well: the pleasure of gathering, unhurried, around food that asks nothing of you except your attention.
The restaurant occupies the third floor of a building a short walk from Kumagaya Station, its private rooms arranged to hold two people or thirty with equal ease. Warm lighting falls across wood-finished interiors, and the sound of the street below fades as soon as the door closes. This is a space designed for conversation — for the kind of evening that stretches longer than planned.
Japanese cuisine here draws from Kyushu and the broader tradition of Japanese izakaya cooking. Wagyu offal simmers in a soy-based broth, softening into something rich and yielding, spiced with mentaiko that blooms pink into the stock. Thinly sliced beef tongue arrives in a collagen-rich soup, its texture tender and clean, carrying the quiet savoriness of long preparation. A lacquered jubako box holds layers of sashimi, ikura, and egg custard — each component arranged like a small landscape.
Seasonal a la carte dishes and course menus with drinks included offer a range of ways to spend an evening. The rhythm here is generous. Food comes steadily, sake and shochu move through the table, and at some point the hour no longer seems to matter. That unhurried quality is, perhaps, what stays with you longest after leaving.
