Savor the authentic flavors of Osaka without leaving Tokyo in this cooking class in the bustling downtown area of Ikebukuro. You’ll learn to make okonomiyaki, one of Japan’s soul foods, from scratch, led by knowledgeable hosts, as part of a small group class of up to 4 participants.
Okonomiyaki are savory pancakes, usually filled with a mix of flour-based batter, egg, shredded cabbage, dashi stock and meat and vegetables. In this class, you’ll learn tips for making two delicious types of okonomiyaki from scratch. You’ll first make pork okonomiyaki, which you’ll enjoy topped with a rich okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise and a sprinkling of seaweed. You’ll also make decadent seafood okonomiyaki filled with a mix of squid, clams and shrimp, a savory and umami-rich combination. Alternatively, a vegetarian request may also be available if requested when booking.
You’ll mix, grill and flip the okonomiyaki until perfectly cooked with guidance from your hosts, and learn invaluable cooking tips and traditional techniques to bring this quintessential Japanese food into your own kitchen.
You’ll complement your meal with an accordion-cut cucumber appetizer, which you’ll learn to make yourself, as well as a delicious dessert. After enjoying your meal, your host will take you to a local supermarket run by a former fishmonger, where you’ll go over the seasonings and ingredients used for okonomiyaki, allowing you to easily recreate these dishes at home.
