Experience Details
Nestled on the border between the cities of Kobe and Nishinomiya is Nada-Gogo, a cluster of sake breweries dating back to the 1330s. This area is the largest sake producer in Japan, accounting for over a quarter of the entire country’s output. In this brewery tour, you’ll dive into its historic streets, discover the magic behind Japanese rice wine and try five different types of sake, each with its own unique flavors.
You’ll begin at the Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewery Museum, which dates back to 1659. Here, you’ll explore traditional brewing methods that have powered this region for centuries. If you are lucky, you may even receive a guided tour by the toji, a master sake brewer. Sip on two different types of sake before leaving the museum, comparing the deep flavors of each cup.
Next, you’ll head to Kiku-Masamune Taruzake Master Factory. Here, craftsmen painstakingly construct sake kegs using Yoshino cedar from nearby Nara prefecture. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see the kegs being made.
Your last stop is Hakutsuru Sake Brewery. Discover the entire sake-making process, from fermenting the rice koji to filling the cask with sake to begin the aging process. Then, enjoy a tasting of two different types of Hakatsuru sake. You’ll be able to appreciate the flavors on a deeper level with your new knowledge of this historic alcohol.
