Experience Details
Step inside Toto-an, a quiet, historic home in Tamba, Sasayama, where life slows down as soon as you arrive.
This is a real family home, gently opened by a local host who welcomes you into a space shaped by memory, tradition, and care. Inside, the soft scent of tatami and the warmth of aged wood bring an immediate sense of calm.
The host will greet you and introduce the Japanese tea ceremony, a tradition in which every movement has meaning. It is explained in a simple, welcoming way that makes it easy to follow, even for first-time visitors.
You will then see the tea tools used in the ceremony, each with its own story. Some are made from local clay, while others were crafted long ago by the host’s great-grandfather and are no longer made today. Together, they carry a quiet link to the home’s history.
Before the tea begins, traditional Japanese sweets from a local shop are served. Their gentle sweetness softens the palate and pairs naturally with the slight bitterness of freshly whisked matcha.
The host then demonstrates how to prepare matcha with slow, careful movements. The soft sound of the bamboo whisk fills the room, followed by a quiet moment as the tea is served.
Then, it is your turn to make the tea. You will hold the tea bowl, use the bamboo whisk, and prepare your own matcha. It is a simple, hands-on moment that feels calm and focused, and stays with you.
You are welcome to ask questions throughout the session while the English-speaking host shares stories about the tea ceremony, the utensils, and the home in a natural, easygoing way.
Tamba Sasayama is a quiet countryside town near Osaka and Kyoto, known for its preserved traditions and slower pace of life. This experience lets you step into a real family home and connect with Japanese tea culture in a personal way.
