We had a great time with Masa on this tour! It was nice exploring Nagano and Zenkoji Temple before the sake tasting. Masa was very knowledgable and shared local recommendations. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Nagano!

A wonderful experience with lots of helpful and interesting information about Zenjoki Temple and Nagano. My daughter and I did this while the rest of the family skied and we are so glad we did. The local foods included were very thoughtfully selected and very special. Loved the traditional oyaki dumplings experience in front of the open fire (perfect on the snowy day). Delicious! And the tea and sweets in a store that had once been a tea house were delightful. I bought extra for the family. Our food quirks (I’m a pescatarian and don’t drink alcohol) were taken into account by our host and it was a very enjoyable and informative morning. Thoroughly recommend!!

We did the izakaya food tour with Masa and it’s one of the best things we did on our trip. Masa brought us to some great local izakayas that we wouldn’t have ever found or gone to ourselves. He was super informative; explaining all the different dishes not just from Nagano but all around the country. He was also great to answer questions or queries on Japan and just to have a nice chat. Would definitely recommend!

Masa was an excellent tour guide, and very accommodating when I mistakenly thought the tour started an hour later than it actually did. He was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I’d highly recommend this tour!

Explore Nagano’s Vegetarian Delights

Nagano, nestled amid the towering Japanese Alps, is not just famous for its beautiful scenery and winter sports; it also offers a culinary journey that surprises and delights, even for vegetarians. This region, renowned for its fresh produce and traditional Japanese flavors, has embraced the vegetarian movement with open arms. You'll find a variety of vegetarian food experiences that beautifully blend tradition with innovation, making it an ideal destination for those keen to explore plant-based dining. From innovative restaurants to traditional dining experiences, Nagano has something for every palette.

Discover Local Ingredients and Traditional Recipes

Nagano's fertile lands provide a bounty of ingredients perfect for vegetarian dishes. This region is known for its superior-quality vegetables, such as Nagano mushrooms and local greens, which are staples in many traditional dishes. The use of buckwheat flour, a Nagano specialty, offers a taste of the famous soba noodles, made entirely vegetarian-friendly just for your needs. Furthermore, you may find experiences that incorporate the seasonal ingredients Nagano is famous for, such as apples, grapes, and even edamame. Each bite will give you a taste of the region's rich agricultural heritage.

Traditional Japanese dining experiences have long incorporated plant-based options due to the historical influence of Buddhism. One must-try is Shojin Ryori, a vegetarian meal originally developed for Buddhist monks that features dishes rich in texture and flavor, utilizing tofu, seasonal vegetables, and wild mountain plants. These experiences often emphasize harmony, not just in taste but also in the visual presentation of dishes.

Enjoy Unique Vegetarian Experiences

From casual eateries to upscale dining, Nagano’s vegetarian food scene is as diverse as it is delicious. Imagine tasting exquisite vegetarian kaiseki – a multi-course Japanese dinner that is as much an art form as a meal. Each plate is meticulously prepared to highlight the natural flavors and beauty of plant-based ingredients. Also, make sure to explore charming soba noodle workshops, where you can not only taste but learn to make vegetarian soba noodles yourself. These noodles are a staple of Japanese cuisine and provide a wholesome, satisfying meal option for vegetarians.

Moreover, Nagano has numerous vegetarian-friendly cafes and eateries where you can enjoy lighter meals or snacks made from local produce. From matcha-flavored confections to tofu-based desserts, there are many delightful surprises waiting to be discovered. These experiences not only satisfy your hunger but also offer you a window into the Japanese way of life, where balance and mindfulness are key culinary principles.

In summary, Nagano is a vibrant destination for vegetarians looking to explore Japanese cuisine in a setting that respects and celebrates plant-based dining. Whether you're enjoying a hearty vegetarian soba dish or a delicate serving of Shojin Ryori, every experience on this journey will delight your senses and leave you craving more.
