Kentaro was our tour guide. He was a font of interesting information about Japan, Osaka and local food.

Our guide, Russ, was very knowledgeable and, true to his Welsh roots, he entertained us with many fun stories and anecdotes about both the old and new Osaka . Wondering through the streets and side alleys, Russ introduced us to many restaurants, shops, and (yes) even a temple that is also home to a large family of cats. As well, a shout out to Virginia who accompanied us as a guide-in-training. Lots of fun and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience a special part of Osaka!

Spencer exceeded our initial expectations as our tour guide for the evening. The tour started a bit awkwardly, but Spencer’s eclectic knowledge helped spark conversations which connected us as a group.
The tour started at the bridge overlooked by the popular Glico man where Spencer provided history on the origins of the company and mascot. At the first food stop, we had 4 different types of takoyaki which was the best we’ve ever had - piping hot crispy crust, decadent gooey insides, and juicy pops of chewy octopus.
The tour continued through some cute alleyways where Spencer highlighted art work depicting the history of Osaka and a tiny shrine for the 1 inch-high samurai. The next food stop, which we never would have discovered on our own, was a quiet restaurant featuring homestyle cooking. Here we had tonjiru (pork-based soup), agedashi tofu, and a tsukune skewer. Spencer also bought us a round of drinks.
We then walked through the busy streets of Dotonbori and marveled at the oversized mascots and kitschy decor above the restaurants. Spencer pointed out the restaurant where conveyor belt sushi was invented, which we went back to try later. The next stop was a busy izakaya packed with locals that would be intimidating for foreigners to enter unguided. We had 2 types of okonomiyaki, chicken karaage, and more drinks. We felt like we got a taste of being a local.
Last was a taiyaki stall with hot fish shaped cakes - the perfect street dessert capping a fun night in Osaka!

Russ was a pretty fun guide for our first night out in Osaka. He exclusively speaks English so if that is something you would like definitely go for the tour. Good food and pretty good conversation throughout!

This was an unforgettable experience on our trip to Japan - we loved the 3 hour tour and were so sad when it finished! Osaka is amazing. The insanely busy streets contrast the tiny food stalls and hidden restaurants. So many delicious things to try - introduced to us by our fun and insightful guide, Taena. She was so knowledgeable about local culture of Osaka and the food there. Taena speaks perfect English and shared great insights as a native Japanese person that she understands is quite revealing for foreigners (she is Japanese but grew up in Australia). Although it says its a nightlife tour it begins in the late afternoon so it finishes quite early in the night if you want to keep drinking and soak up the colourful Osaka atmosphere. We wanted to keep partying so Taena showed us some tiny back alleys with bars that sit only 6 people at a time! (Some serve food but by the end you probably will be full already). It was a pleasure and a highlight of our 3 week trip for sure.

Taiga promptly met us then guided us walking on a fantastic food tour with the best food we have had in Japan. Firstly we ate the best sushi we have eaten in Japan!!! Next we made our own octopus balls (fun and delicious) and then finally ate some grilled skewers. This experience was really worth it, thanks to Taiga who was very accomodating, attentive, and informative throughout the tour!

We took the retro street food tour with Taiga in Osaka and had a great time. We visited some interesting places (there's no way we would have gone there on our own) including an impressive knife shop. Taiga really encouraged us to try new foods and while we would not have the confidence to pick which ones to try by ourselves they were all very yum! The best part was when we got to try making our own Takoyaki by ourselves (octopus dumpling things). We learned a lot about the local area and new foods by the end of the tour, and very full!!

We explored the Shinsekai area of Osaka on this tour, very well done. This area is like an old amusmement park meets lots of retro restaurants district. Our guide Yuko made sure we were very well looked after throughout the tour - and Yuko was funny, really knowledgeable, and very adaptable so we felt very relaxed! Overall the trip is very well rounded because of course you eat some delicious culinary surprises (cakes, takoyaki balls, skewers, smoothies etc) but also other visits to see knife making, pinball, and learn about the history of Osaka in the 20th century. This tour has a little of everything so I have no hesistations recommending this tour to anyone. Great itinerary.
