Teppanyaki Steak Kisentei Ningyocho
Occupying the first floor of a heritage building in Nihombashi, this perennial favorite teppanyaki restaurant boasts a century-old legacy.
Restaurant Details
This tiled-roofed, red-painted heritage building in Ningyocho — Tokyo’s “doll town” and a former downtown area of Edo — once housed a famous rakugo comedy theatre during the Showa and Meiji eras. Now, it is home to two restaurants operating the same renowned Imahan brand that dates back to 1895.
An offshoot of the sukiyaki empire, Kisentei takes cues from its flagship Ningyocho Imahan that sits the second floor of the same building to bring the same formidable lineup of beef under a different cloak: teppanyaki. While Ningyocho Imahan might favor thinly sliced marbled beef cooked in simmering soy sauce-based, Kisentei excels in the high-heat thrill of grilling, dishing up perfectly seared but delicately flavored kuroge wagyu, seafood and hyper-seasonal produce.
Teppan iron grills are pitted on each table. During supper, the main event could extend beyond marbled beef to include seabream, roast beef meat sushi and teppanyaki classics like garlic rice. Kisentei isn’t shy to bring out the delicacies either: tiger prawns, spiny lobster and abalone get the same treatment as the other iron-grilled proteins.
All of this is housed in a rustic, timber-clad space. Although the feel is refined, Kisentei is truly a neighborhood spot— an atmospheric venue with polished wood counter set within partitioned shoji sliding screens.
