Experience Details

Although lesser known than other fish markets in Tokyo like Tsukiji or Toyosu, the Adachi Fish Market is a bustling institution that has been providing some of the freshest seafood to the city since 1945. This Adachi Fish Market Tour is an exclusive opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Japan’s fish market culture and discover some of the tastiest seafood delicacies (as well as some strange sights) in Tokyo.

You’ll arrive at the market early in the morning and meet your host, who will guide you through the stalls where busy fishmongers will be setting up their fresh offerings. Expect to see seasonal fish and seafood like tuna, salmon, scallops and also unusual sea creatures you’d rarely get to see outside a market like this.

While the largest fish market in Tokyo, Toyosu Fish Market, is known for being strict and not allowing tourists inside the wholesale market area, if you still want to experience the wild and fascinating world of seafood in Japan, this tour of the Adachi Fish Market welcomes you!

Please note that while you can enjoy the seafood restaurants bordering the Adachi Fish Market any day of the week, you can’t always get access to the fish market’s wholesale area, as it’s only open to the public on one Saturday every two months, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Please feel free to inquire with your host to check the available dates.

Experience Location

Tokyo’s second largest fish market, the Adachi Fish Market is located in Kita-Senju, an area which has a long history of accommodating travelers passing through. During the early years of the Edo period, traffic through Senju was quite heavy and Kita-Senju was a postal station where Daimyo stopped to rest before continuing their travels. Now a residential area, Kita-Senju is far from the typical image you might have of Tokyo (neon lights, swarms of impeccably-dressed people). Full of narrow streets and very local hidden gems, in Kita-Senju you can find the freshest produce at affordable costs.

At what time does the Adachi Fish Market tour start?

This tour of the Adachi Fish Market in Tokyo starts early at 7:30 a.m. Please note that the tour starts strictly on time and late arrivals cannot be accommodated.

Where is the Adachi Fish Market located?

The Adachi Fish Market is located in Northeastern Tokyo’s Adachi ward, within walking distance from Senjuohashi Station on the Keisei Line. It can be reached by train in about 15 minutes from Nippori Station, or a little bit over 30 minutes by train from Asakusa Station.

What to eat on an Adachi Fish Market tour?

This tour includes a bowl of kaisendon (a seafood rice bowl) for breakfast. Apart from that, you can try all the delicious seafood you can find, including sashimi, sushi and more, at your own expense. Be sure to ask your host for suggestions and recommendations!

What’s the difference between Toyosu and Adachi Fish Markets?

Tsukiji’s inner fish market relocated to Toyosu in 2018 due to infrastructural needs. The new Toyosu Market is double the size of that of Tsukiji, but to attend its famous tuna auctions it’s necessary to apply in advance for a ticket lottery. The Adachi Fish Market, on the other hand, is open to the public on one Saturday every two months (from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.). While each one of Tokyo’s fish markets is different in size, area and history, they are all well worth a visit.

What is the most famous fish market in Tokyo?

The most famous fish market in Tokyo is probably Tsukiji, once the world’s largest seafood market. Today, Tsukiji still has an outer market area that continues to be very popular with visitors. The Toyosu Fish Market, on the other hand, while newer than Tsukiji, is already a rising destination drawing a lot of attention for its modern infrastructure and multiple attractions. The Adachi Fish Market is perhaps the lesser-known out of the three, at least among tourists. Still, it is one of the major fish wholesalers in the city, and is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking to visit a local, authentic fish market.
